A sealing toilet works, as the name suggests, on the principle of sealing. All excretions—urine and solids—enter one and the same bag and are individually sealed airtight at the push of a button after use. Unlike a separating toilet or a composting toilet, no separation or drying of the excretions takes place here.
What is a sealing toilet?
In a sealing toilet, you have a different type of camping toilet. It differs significantly from a separating toilet or a composting toilet. Unlike these two variants, no separation of urine and solids occurs in a sealing toilet. This approach makes the toilet one of the most hygienic toilet systems and is even used in clinics and care facilities in Japan. After the sealing process, you no longer come into contact with the bag’s contents. Likewise, thanks to the self-regenerating liner film, cleaning the sealing toilet is not necessary.
What types of sealing toilets are there?
You can choose from various providers and manufacturers who offer different models. For example, there are sealing toilets designed for permanent installation in motorhomes or campers that require a fixed power connection. In contrast, there are also mobile variants, such as our LooSeal EVO. It has been designed for portable use, can be set up anywhere at any time, and does not require a fixed connection to the power grid.
How does a sealing toilet work?
The operating principle is as simple as its handling. In a sealing toilet, a film liner is inserted before the first use. This liner is pulled over a ring beneath the toilet seat and clamped into the rollers with the help of a small tool. This liner is an endless tube that automatically advances fresh film after each sealing process until its capacity is exhausted. This ensures that the sealing toilet is hygienic and clean for the next use. Depending on the liner, there is a different capacity of bags that can be sealed. After using the toilet, the sealing process is started at the push of a button. During this process, the film is pulled down, a bar with Teflon tape moves forward and, using an opposing strip of Teflon tape, seals the bag airtight and odor-free. At the same time, the bag is separated from the remaining liner and dispensed from the bottom of the sealing toilet. It can then either be removed immediately or collected in an additional container. If a compostable film is used, note that the bags should be disposed of promptly to prevent odor formation. The sealed bags are disposed of with the residual waste.
Does a sealing toilet stink?
No, due to the immediate sealing in an airtight film, neither the sealing toilet nor its waste emits any odor. However, you should pay attention to which film liner you use. Depending on the manufacturer, there are compostable and non-compostable liners, and only the liner that belongs to the sealing toilet should be used. If you opt for a compostable liner, the bag should be disposed of promptly, as odors could penetrate the bag depending on the enzymes. In the variant that is non-compostable, the bag can safely be collected in a separate bucket for up to 2 weeks before disposal.
How do I clean a sealing toilet?
Due to its hygienic concept, cleaning a sealing toilet is almost completely unnecessary. After the initial insertion of the liner, the film is automatically renewed after each use until the liner’s capacity is exhausted. This ensures that the inside of the sealing toilet always remains clean and hygienic. Only the toilet seat and the toilet itself may be cleaned with a damp cloth if needed.
How are the bags from a sealed toilet disposed of?
The disposal of a sealing toilet is very simple and requires little effort. The airtight and odor-free bag is dispensed from the bottom of the toilet after the sealing process. If there is no separate collection container, the bag can be removed without any difficulty. The used bags can then be easily disposed of with the residual waste. This makes you significantly more flexible than with a chemical toilet, as you are not dependent on a disposal station. If compostable bags are used, they should not be stored for more than a maximum of one week. This ensures that, at the time of final disposal, the bag is still intact and nothing leaks out.
Can I dispose of the bags from a sealed toilet in a normal toilet?
No, because the excretions are sealed in a bag after use, they must not be disposed of in a conventional toilet. Unlike separating toilets or composting toilets, where urine is separated from solids, a sealing toilet does not provide any separation and thus does not have components that can be disposed of separately. If the bag were disposed of in a conventional home toilet, it would clog the system. Furthermore, the bags are not suitable for sewage treatment plants and would cause problems.
What is the cost of a sealing toilet?
The cost of a sealing toilet depends on the model you choose. There is a distinction between a permanently installed version and a mobile version that can be set up anywhere regardless of location. Depending on the variant you choose, the price can range from €599 to €1500.
Which garbage bags are suitable for the sealing toilet?
In this sense, a sealing toilet does not use garbage bags that must be repeatedly replaced and renewed. Instead, a film liner is inserted before the first use, which consists of an endless tube. Depending on the model, it has a different capacity; once this is exhausted, a new liner is inserted. When selecting the liner, you must ensure that the liner belongs to the respective sealing toilet. This is important because each liner is precisely calibrated to the sealing unit of the toilet.
Where should the toilet paper go in a sealing toilet?
A sealing toilet can seal not only excretions airtight but also food scraps, feminine hygiene products, and thus toilet paper. These can be easily placed into the sealing toilet after use and sealed. In this way, everything is collected in the bag, and no extra trash can for the toilet paper is needed. What are the advantages of a sealing toilet?
One of the greatest advantages of a sealing toilet is that there is hardly any other system that operates as hygienically and autonomously. Due to the rapid sealing process, you never come into contact with the excretions and can immediately dispose of them or collect them in an extra trash can with a bag. In addition, a sealing toilet can also dispose of feminine hygiene products, diapers, food scraps, or wet wipes. The contents do not affect the sealing process. With a portable sealing toilet, such as our LooSeal EVO and LooSeal TANK, you also have the advantage that it can be set up anywhere at any time without much effort and is ready for use. If you no longer need the toilet, you can fold it up and store it compactly. Another advantage is that the operation is very simple, as the process can be started at the push of a button. Equally important is that the sealing toilet works under all circumstances, including during illness or in tropical climates, and is capable of sealing the bags.
What are the disadvantages of a sealing toilet?
A disadvantage of sealing toilets is the somewhat higher running costs compared to, for example, separating toilets or composting toilets. Accessories are required without which the toilet is not functional. In addition, you are dependent on the availability of liners and super-absorbers. Therefore, a sealing toilet is less flexible when it comes to purchasing accessories, as the liner film must be provided by the toilet manufacturer. Liners from other manufacturers usually do not fit the toilet system and can even cause damage to the sealing toilet.
